I was certain that on this Sunday morning, just like every other Sunday morning, Andrew and his wife would play tennis on the clay courts near the community center at the base of the mountain. On their way home they would stop at the fruit stand on Second Street, where they would each order a fresh coconut. They’d eat it at the picnic table in the shade on the far end of the park, high above the Los Angeles Basin, in the shadow of the San Gabriel Mountains, and when they were done, they’d drive back to their two-bedroom bungalow on Eleventh Street, where they’d both shower. Not together.

Andrew would put on his uniform and tell Ilana he was on the overnight. He’d tell her to keep her fingers crossed that there were no fires or floods. He might even say he loved her. And then he’d drive up the mountain, park his car at the station, and walk to the end of the dirt road, where he’d see the empty canyon wall. He would feel bad for me, I knew that. But it wouldn’t be enough for him to leave her.
